BANGKOK, June 30 (TNA) – Thailand’s sagging economy requires state economic stimulus measures to recover during the next one and a half years, according to a top Thai banker.
Mr. Kosit Panpiemras, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Bangkok Bank Plc, the country’s largest commercial bank, said that the gross domestic product (GDP) for this year is set to shrink 3 per cent as earlier projected, while political uncertainties seem to be heightening.
At the same time, Mr. Kosit said he believed the ongoing political conflicts would not worsen the current economic deterioration.
However, the government must implement its economic stimulus measures to shore up the ailing economy.
“Whether exports will recover or not depends on the direction of the global economy and trade. Now, the private sector is week and vulnerable. It still needs state support over the next one year and half,” he said.
Mr. Kosit said the bank maintained the projection of its loan growth at 3-5 per cent this year although lending continued to contract in the past two quarters.
Still, he predicts the economy will revive in the fourth quarter this year, boosted by the state-initiated economic stimulus scheme.
Regarding the government’s plan to issue new savings bonds, he said the measure will not affect short-term interest offered by commercial banks since the bond issue provides the public with another choice for long-term investment.
